Best Beaches Near Syracuse, Sicily
Syracuse is one of the few cities in Sicily where you can walk from a UNESCO World Heritage site to a stunning beach in under ten minutes. Whether you're looking for a quiet cove, a lively beach club, a natural reserve or a long sandy shore, the coastline around Syracuse has something for every kind of traveller. Here is our guide, ordered by distance from the city centre.
Close to the City Centre — 0 to 5 km
1. Cala Rossa
One of the closest swimming spots to Ortigia, Cala Rossa is a small rocky cove with clear water right at the edge of the historic centre. Ideal for a quick morning swim before exploring the old town — no equipment needed, just show up and dive in.
2. Scoglio Rù Frati
A beloved local spot along the Rossana Maiorca coastal bike path. The Monks' Rock sits in a stretch of wild, unspoiled coastline with a natural solarium — flat limestone rocks perfect for sunbathing and swimming in crystal-clear Ionian water. Locals know it well; tourists rarely find it.
3. La Tonnara — Santa Panagia
A evocative and secluded spot beside the ruins of an ancient tuna factory. The rocky shoreline here is dramatic and quiet — more suited to those looking for atmosphere and solitude than a classic beach day. The views along the coastline towards Targia are spectacular.
4. Spiaggia Punta del Pero
A small, lesser-known beach on the southern tip of the Ortigia peninsula. Rocky and intimate, it offers some of the cleanest water close to the city and beautiful views of the open sea. A favourite among locals who prefer to avoid the crowds.
5. Grotta della Pillirina
Located within a protected natural reserve, this rocky cove is one of the most unspoiled stretches of coastline near the city. The water is exceptionally clear and the area is popular with snorkellers and freedivers. No facilities — bring everything you need.
Middle Distance — 5 to 12 km
6. Spiaggia del Minareto
A sheltered sandy beach attached to the Minareto Hotel complex. Well-organised and family-friendly, it offers sun loungers, umbrellas and all the comforts of a proper lido. The calm, protected waters make it ideal for children and less confident swimmers.
7. Piscina del Plemmirio
A natural rock pool within the Plemmirio Marine Reserve — one of the most biodiverse stretches of sea in the Mediterranean. The water here is extraordinarily clear and rich in marine life, making it a paradise for snorkellers and divers. Worth exploring further.
8. Cala Zaffiro
A rocky cove on the Plemmirio headland, known for its remarkable biodiversity and crystal-clear water. Popular with divers and snorkellers, it sits within a protected marine area where fish, octopus and sea urchins are abundant. One of the most scenic spots on the Syracuse coast.
9. Arenella
One of the most popular beaches with Syracuse locals, Arenella is well-equipped with beach clubs, restaurants and bars. The mix of sand and rock makes it suitable for all ages. It gets busy on weekends — arrive early to secure a good spot.
10. Spiaggia Asparano — Ognina
A rocky beach in the Ognina area, known for its rich marine life and biodiversity. Surrounded by several well-known bars and restaurants — including some of the venues we featured in our Things to Do in Syracuse guide — it's the perfect spot to combine a swim with an evening out.
11. Fly Beach — Fanusa
A popular lido with a full restaurant and pizzeria on site. Fly Beach offers a complete day out — sun loungers, food, drinks and a lively atmosphere. A good option if you want a relaxed, all-inclusive beach day without having to bring your own supplies.
12. Spiaggia Massolivieri
A less crowded sandy beach on the southern stretch of the Syracuse coast. Massolivieri is a good choice for those looking for a quieter alternative to the busier lidos closer to the city, with clean water and a relaxed atmosphere.
Further Afield — 12 km and Beyond
13. Fontane Bianche — 14 km
The most famous beach near Syracuse — a long stretch of white sand and shallow turquoise water, popular with families, tourists and locals alike. Well-equipped with beach clubs, hotels, bars and nightclubs. Gets very busy in peak summer — arrive early or visit on a weekday.
14. Spiaggia di Gallina — 18 km
A quiet, natural beach near Avola with very little infrastructure — no lidos, no crowds, just nature. The sand is fine and the water clean. If you're looking to escape the summer chaos and enjoy the coast in peace, this is the place.
15. Cala Mosche — 30 km
One of the most beautiful beaches in all of Sicily, located within the Vendicari Nature Reserve. A pristine stretch of white sand surrounded by unspoiled Mediterranean scrub and wetlands. No facilities, no cars nearby — you walk to reach it, which keeps the crowds away. Unmissable.
16. Marzamemi — 32 km
More than a beach — Marzamemi is one of the most charming fishing villages in Sicily. The historic tuna factory, the picturesque square, the seafood restaurants and the lively summer nightlife make it worth the drive even if you don't swim. The beaches nearby are rocky but beautiful.
17. Lido di Noto — 35 km
A long sandy beach close to the Baroque city of Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Combine a morning on the beach with an afternoon exploring Noto's extraordinary architecture — it makes for a perfect full-day trip from Syracuse.
18. Laghetti di Cavagrande — 40 km
Not a beach at all — but one of the most spectacular natural spots in eastern Sicily. A series of freshwater pools carved into a deep canyon, fed by cool mountain streams. The water is cold even in August, making it a welcome escape from the summer heat. Requires a moderately demanding hike to reach — worth every step.
19. Santa Maria del Focallo — 70 km
One of the longest and most beautiful sandy beaches in Sicily, located near Ispica in the Ragusa province. The water is shallow and the sand fine — ideal for families with children. At 70km from Syracuse it's a proper day trip, but the beach is exceptional and rarely overcrowded compared to more famous destinations.
